Lianor (and anyone else with such questions)
I would be happy to help with this. Feel free to call, because such discussion is probably best done in a method other than e-mail. 801-638-4115.
Armor is not necessary at all, but is rather just for the "coolness" factor. I would recommend a cup for the little squire, and I recommend elbow and knee pads, as well. I will e-mail you instructions on shield making I wrote, published in the sage about a year ago, that should answer you questions in that regard. I will have to do it later, because I don't have the file on the computer I am using.
I have also had some of the helms returned to me, as others have grown out of them. One of those may fit, if he still likes that kind of helm...
There are many styles of gorget that will work. I made leather ones for my kids. again, call me.

Subject: [Artemisia] Quick & Dirty Youth Armor
Can anyone instruct me in making cheap, quick armor for 10 year olds?
Eduardo grew out of the wonderful helm Padruig made for him. He's already
ot a padded coif so we wouldn't have to worry about that. I have some
sports helms" but I'd like to modify them to make them look at least
omewhat less mundane. I don't think I could manage some of the really
wesome helmet mods I've seen, but with a little instruction I could do
omething like a leather covering or adding a crest made out of a broom.
Are there websites that show how to do this? He's got a nice shield that
y brother made for him, but he wants to bring a friend to an event, and
elipe is getting old enough for youth combat too, so if anyone could tell
e how to make a quick shield I'd much appreciate it. I've seen the ones
ade of foam and they look pretty simple, but I don't know what kind of foam
t is.
Since my little squire is now 10, I think I'll have to make a gorget for him
oo, yes? What should I make it out of? The youth combat manual says
losed-cell foam but I'm not entirely sure how to make that look like
omething other than foam. Does he also need body armor? If so, would a
ambeson suffice?
Obrigada,
ianor
