I'm not Red your Grace, but I have found the simple auger/spoon drills(like that shown on the Bayeux Tapestry) to be a bit simpler to use with better results...Maybe my string wasn't tight enough, but I found with the bow drill to much down pressure and the bit wouldn't turn...For bigger holes(like what would be used by timber framing with dowels) the spoon type bit(or a modern spade bit) would only really work in this kind of drill...
Shoelaces can be cut from leather using a spiral cutter...A small piece of leather can give a huge length on lace spiral cut....
I may not be a religious man, But I play one on the weekends.
