Interestingly, even though it has 4 small windows, and part of the
foundation walls are above ground level, my (Montana) basement has never
frozen.  Even in the winters when it was -30 for extended periods.  (now
watch it freeze this year!)  I have shelves of canned goods down there that
do just fine.  There have been years when I could see frost on the insides
of the cement walls from the top, down a couple feet, though.
