Today I spoke with another Challenge entrant. She had a number of
questions. I would like to share with everyone an e-mail Maestra Bianca sent to
me in June.

Greetings!

Would it be correct to say that it is possible to earn extra credit for
each subcategory?

Would multiple points be possible for accessories?

Thanks!
Bengta

They are all costume accessories. The first accessory meets the "Accessory
Layer" requirement. The second and third additional accessory count as up
to 10 bonus points each for creating each of them.

Layer 1: shift (Costume: Tourney Pre 1000, 1-10 points for completing
"underwear" layer),
Needlework: Pulled thread (1-10 points, Needlework: Pulled Thread),
hand-sewn (1-10 points for "handwork", and requirement for "handsewn
underlayer" is met)

Layer 2: hangerock (Costume: Tourney Pre 1000, 1-10 points for completing
"garment" layer),
trimmed in card-woven trim (Textile Arts: Woven, 1-10 points )
from threads spun & dyed by entrant (Textile Arts: Construction, 1-10
points),
brooches cast by entrant (Metalwork: Casting, 1-10 points),
couching in acanthus vine pattern from Mamnen cloak (1-10 points
Needlwork: Couching),
lucet woven by entrant (1=10 points, Textile Arts: Application) and
weregeld (1-10 points, Jewelry: Strung Jewelry) with
beads crafted by entrant (1-10 points, Glass: lampwork)

Layer 3: Caftan (Costume: Tourney Pre 1000, 1-10 points, for completing
"outer" layer),
fur-lined wool coat (1-10 points for use of fur),
Cast buttons for closures (The "Metalwork: Casting skill was demonstrated
with the brooches,
so this item can improve the Casting skill overall, but does not count as
a second points
option for this talent),
with applique (1-10 points, Needlework: Applique) of the entrant's
heraldry (1-10 points, Heraldic
Display: Garment)

Layer 4: socks (1-10 for completing the "accessory" layer with the item
socks),
socks were made using nal binding (because the Textile Arts: Woven
category was
demonstrated with the card-woven trim, this additional demonstration of
the same category
(woven) skill does not qualify for an additional allocation of points,
however, it may be used to
improve the previous skill. If your weaving is an incredibly simple
pattern and is (say) uneven
and bumpy, this nal binding can be considered and can be used to raise
the score
OR if nal binding is more like knitting, then it would fall under "Textile
Arts: Application" and help the
score from the lucet.)

Bonus Accessory: hat (1-10 points for bonus accessory),
hat is made from felted wool (Textile Arts: Non-woven, 1-10 points),
with applique (points previously allocated, Needlework: Applique)

Bonus Accessory: belt bag UNFINISHED (1-5 points for unfinished belt bag),
tooled leather flap (1-10 points, leatherwork: decorative) of your
heraldry (points previously allocated, heraldic display:garment) on the
pouch,
with a clasp carved from animal horn (1-10 points, Carving Non-Wood: Horn)

Bonus Layer 1: In addition to the shift, you make a mammilare (Greco-Roman
"bra"). This is above-and
-beyond and may earn an additional 1-10 points if you document that the
Norse also
wore them.

Maximum Points for ensemble:
Layers 1-4: 40 points
All layers completed: 10 points
Hand-sewn Underlayer: 10 points
Appropriate Use of Fur: 10 points
Bonus Items: 25 points (hat, unfinished bag, mammilare)

13 Talents (pulled thread,
card-woven trim,
spinning/dying,
casting,
couching,
lucet,
strung jewelry,
lampwork,
applique,
heraldic display,
felting,
leatherwork,
carving):
130 points

Total Maximum: 225 points

If I have socks and a hat and mittens and belt bag. would all 4 be
eligible for accessories although it is one subcategory?

Can you give me an example ?
For instance ...
If "needlework: surface embroidery " is used on the outfit, regardless of
how many instances the skill was used, only 10 bonus points are available
for use of "Needlework: Surface Embroidery".
If fabric is woven and trim is woven, only 10 bonus points are available
for the talent of "Textile Arts: Construction."

If linen thread was spun, and used to assemble the garment, the gloves,
the shoes and a hat, only 10 bonus points are available for the talent of "
Textile Arts: Construction". If thread was spun AND trim was woven from the
same thread, it still falls into the Grand Category of "Textile Arts:
Construction" so only 10 bonus points are available overall, regardless of how
many times this skill was demonstrated.

The other way to garner more points on the contest is to create additional
pieces or layers. Each accessory is 10 points for the completed piece,
plus any and all unique (not used in another item of the ensemble) arts
talents. Consider felted wool boots with some applique work and lucet cording. As
long as you don't have lucet, applique or felting on any other piece of
the ensemble, the boots alone are worth up to 30 points.
    * 10 points for any extra layer/accessory (over and above the four
required) completed

The Artemisian Grand Categories for Competition
The Artemisian Grand Categories are guidelines for placing entries into
categories for judging. They are not set in stone, and often as more becomes
known it is necessary to change where an item falls. Local ministers and
Entrants are encouraged to submit changes and ideas when they encounter new
material so that additional Grand Categories and subcategories may be added
as needed.
