[Artemisia] service animals at SCA events

Lord Kveldulf,
I feel fortunate that Baroness Gefjon brought this topic up. She was doing her
research on her up and coming fiber fest in Hamilton and since it is such good
info she thought she would share with this list.
Now is a good time to bring this issue up since summer camping events are about
to start. I can say, your dog, weather service, therapy or pet is very welcomed
at our Dragons Tear Site. It is pet friendly. Just if you can pick up the poo.
Or ask one of us to give you some help. Out the the non common area not an
issue put in the camping areas probably won't want to leave it behind so some
lady in nice garb won't be dragging it in her dress. :) Though SCA events are
open to non-members, many events are also held on private property so that could
be an issue for what ever reason. It's then the land owners call though most
would not turn down a service dog.
Perhaps you could make a list of events you would like to attend and contact the
event steward or Seneschal of that group and double check. Before you forget. I
would be happy to help you find out if it's alright for you to bring your
service dog. Please let me know. Most of the time I know who to contact etc.
Or, you could post to this list something like "These are the events I plan to
attend. Please contact me off list concerning my service dog." Actually,
everyone on this list would be happy to get the info for you and to assist you
in hauling your gear around if your service dog is in hand or even not in hand.
As far as Uprising is concerned, only Duke Allen can answer about Uprising. I'm
sure he'll address this on the list. Probably busy at work.
Please do let me know if I can help. Oh, and you are not rocking the boat. You
have a valid question.
Yours in Service
Lady Redhawk..
Perhaps event stewards can start including service dog info on their event
registration and in their write up to assist those who really do have a
'service' dog. That way the attendee won't feel automatically excluded when they
see the 'no pets' in the write up. Service dogs are not pets. They are working
helpers and necessary.

Greetings,
I was going to stay out of this discussion, but the more that I read,
the more I feel that I need to put my two-cents in.
I myself am more than happy to leave the decision as to whether-or-not
I will be attending an event up to the land owner. I have a
disability and a service animal, but there are events such as Uprising
that may-as-well have a "no-(my "type" of person)" sign posted at the
gate; I (clinically/legally) lack the capacity to remember to contact
a land-owner in regards to bringing my service animal to an event
prior to my arrival. I will say that there are events that I choose
not to attend as a result of such requirements, in favor of "rocking
the boat" and possibly causing discomfort to others.
As a disabled person I really don't understand how to approach such
events. What am I to do if my service animal who has been trained to
deal with my episodes, is turned away at the gates? Typically, IF I
realize there may be a problem the day before, I choose not to attend.
Whether I'd like to or not.
Just my thoughts and feelings,
Lord Kveldulf Lohipoika.
PS. Out of the body of what I've written, I don't know where society
events really fall. By my understanding SCA events are NOT entirely
private events and therefore fall under "ADA public access events
rules"; due to the fact that we allow non-members, but again I have no
desire to "rock the boat" for land owners such as Sir Allen.
