I think I am rather uniquely qualified to address this particular
concern. I have had the honor of being Invested 3 times over my SCA life
(yes, I am that old) ;o)
Not a one of those Investitures was in my home group and not a one of those
Investitures was anything other than spectacular. Working with out of town
autocrats isn't any different than with those close by -- especially now
with all of the social media gizmos.
Regarding guests - if we really wanted our families to attend a
Coronation, and they couldn't travel to where-ever that Coronation happened
to be in Jan or July, then we wouldn't try to win the preceding Crown
tourney. But, as a point in fact, both of our parents have traveled to
the out of town events - just to see what shenanigans their kids were up to.

Subject: Re: [Artemisia] Kingdom Calendar Change Proposal (long)
In reply to the Proposal-Assigned Coronations; while all of Her
Excellency's points are fully valid, they overlook one of (I believe) the
more meaningful benefits of winning Crown Tournament- Your Coronation Your
way, in the place You choose. Despite all of the evidence to the contrary
(insert the Duke of your choice here), we have to assume that the Prince
and Princess will only be having this experience once. Having Their
Coronation in Their home group, where Their family, including non-SCA
family, can attend, can be an emotionally major part of Their ceremony.
Regarding the rest of her proposal, my only point to consider is that
weather should be removed from the evaluation of the suitability of any
dates; as she noted, we've had beautiful days in mid-January and snow
storms in mid-June, so we should just ignore weather in considering event
feasability.
Of course, I could be wrong.

Life's journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved

but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting
*Wow! What a ride!*
