Aaaackkk!

I stay away from this list for a bit on a business trip, and now they're talking about Principalities!!!!

Yipes!

OK, here's my take. We can barely keep an officer corps going at the Kingdom and Baronial, or even Shire levels. You want to add a whole other level of the Officer Corps? You want to add 2 Coronets Lists and 2 more Investestitures, and maybe a Principality Collegium and A&S???? Wasn't there some discussion recently about how full the schedule is at present?

The other unintended consequence will be a _reduction_ in travel throughout the Kingdom, since people can just stay in their Principality and attend events.

Beware where you go with this, it's not always going to end up with what you wanted. Plus, as Juliana wisely and correctly pointed out, the BoD will want MUCH more than the number of members listed in the SCA Handbook. And beware artificially getting short term members in order to get the numbers for the advancement in status? Does anyone remember a member of 1000 Eyes named Crue, who had a sustaining membership........for those of shorter term play, Crue was a very nice, large Rottweiler. Probably better behaved and certainly better company than some other early Artemisians.....LoL! My point? Don't go there!

Sorry folks, but I've "been there and done that" and it's not a pretty thing.

YIS, Alan

Picking my brain here....That area has "members" (which is in ID, and belongs to 1000 Eyes), but Cdc and 1000 Eyes have internally blurred their line because those who live in the upper Cache Valley play with Cote du Ciel and not the barony. Geographically it's closer, and more cost effective for both groups. They make it "work" for them. On paper; that land is and does belong to the barony. You are correct...but if you ask the local members...they play with Cote du Ciel.

Principalities...the kicker here is that the population centers do not follow the state line format. Artemisia's population is greatest on the north Wastach front, Boise, and to some extent the Idaho Falls area. We need to have healthy groups with a growing local population base to even begin a discussion. Sure the handbook says 100....recommendation the Board will give is 200+ for minimum (double your worth in case your numbers drop.) Just as with kingdoms, it says 400, but they want 800+ (and I'll point out that Artemisia is just over that #...barely.) Those aren't good maintenance numbers. The other thing is that currently MANY of the groups not in those core areas are struggling, and can barely hold the events and officers they have now....a principality split is not going to change that, if anything it may hurt them. I know of at least 3 groups that are a step away from dissolution due to a lack of membership. If the groups go dormant or fail, then it is a downward spiral.

A worthy goal...but we have a ton of work to do before that can ever happen.

What? Unless borders have drastically changed since I made a "to the zip code level" of the Kingdom, from the Kingdom Seneschal's files (hi, Juliana!), splitting at the Idaho/Utah border wouldn't bisect Cote du Ciel, or any other group for that matter. The Barony of 1000 Eyes southern boundary *is* the Idaho/Utah border, as is Cote du Ciel's northern boundary (IIRC, I'm at work so I don't have the digital map with me, and the physical map is now in the possession of HE Robert the Lost). Those boundaries were all set up according to Copora, III.B.2 "Branches below principality level may not cross over state or national borders without the authorization of the Society Seneschal."
