Greetings!

With the camping season upon us, now is the time to make yourself THE must have piece of camping attire. The fleece and fur surcote is so wonderful for those cold evenings and early morning trips to the porta-privy. Period-looking, but practical, the surcote is made of machine-washable fleece and is very comfortable. If you do not already have one of these, this workshop is just the thing for you! Simple to make, so warm and cozy, and great for everyone, you will wonder how you ever lived without this coat!

The workshop will begin with a discussion of the construction steps (about 45 minutes), then individuals will have the opportunity to cut out their own surcote (if desired). A detailed hand-out will be provided.

If you want to begin work on your own surcote, please bring the following:

Tape measure
Fabric shears
Long straight pins
Chalk or other fabric marker
Fleece in a "period" color

To determine how much fabric you will need, take a measurement from your shoulder to the floor or desired length of your surcote. Men typically had shorter surcotes; some were above the knee. Since we are making the surcote for warmth, generally a man’s surcote would be mid-calf length. Women’s surcotes were longer, sometimes to the ground, but if you don’t like the idea of your fur dragging in the dirt, then it might be a good idea to make the surcote a few inches above ground length. Double the garment length measurement, then divide by 36 for the yardage. If your arm span measurement (from wrist to shoulder, across the back, to the other shoulder then wrist) is greater than 60”, add another ¾ yard to your yardage.

What a great opportunity to be able to not only learn about what you are going to make, but to be able to have the extra help if you need it, make the garment the same day, and take it home with you!

The workshop will be held Saturday May 31st and will start at 10am.
This will be held at the home of Baroness Anna 972 E. 7725 S. Midvale Utah

Please RSVP for this workshop by contacting Baroness Anna at rcfaevans at comcast.net or 801-568-7794.

Hope to see many of you there!
