<DIV>At least in later period, that's exactly what would have been done. Guilds would have a specific color or colors and when a new Master was made, they would have to buy Guild robes in that specific color. (I always imagine them looking like academic robes, but I'm not entirely certain what they looked like.) From what I've gathered, Master level robes were pretty expensive, so many people who could have been Masters didn't because they couldn't afford the robes.</DIV>
