I'm at home doing PT half the time still (surgery Nov. 21 on rt. shoulder), getting back into weaving a little, trying to get back into painting, and very slowly moving stuff we have stored in the sugarhouse into the barn or the apartment before sugaring season.... which isn't really until mid/late February, but I figured if we started now, we might be done by then. Still re-building my endurance, so Lyle has to deal with my suddenly tiring out at times as I try to figure out how much energy I actually have and how much the shoulder is going to take for healing. At least it's my off-hand ;) Oh, wait, did you know we moved? Hey everybody, we're still in Bergental/Western Mass., but now we're in Lyle's hometown of Ashfield, living in the 2nd floor apartment over his folks. Sold the house in Holyoke and everything. This year at Northern Lights I have to show up with a dotted print. So far I have been unsuccessful in my attempts at making one. (But I have at least a month... EEEK!) We haven't skipped any reigns since the Company was formed. We have given gifts at _both_ 12th Night _and_ Spring Coronation. At the first Spring Coronation, it was when the Company was awarded its Charter. The following 12th Night, it was because it's a traditional date for giving gifts. We have maintained that pattern for the next several reigns. I have always liked the idea of giving gifts to seated Royalty, so that they can use them during [at least part of] the reign. If we only give gifts to the Winter Royalty at their last court, we lose that effect. This is the first year since the Company was chartered that we have _not_ given gifts at 12th Night. The event site has electric at the large covered A&S pavilion, but no kitchen. The site is an open grassy area with 3 huge covered pavilions. Electric & water are available in many spots as this site is used as a fair ground. There are fairly new flush bathrooms and a couple of buildings that can be used for clean classes as well. The event takes place in Warrensburg, NY (Northway exit 23) a bit over an hour north of Albany, about 10 min north of Lake George Village. If you would be interested, please contact me for any additional information. Good luck with the dotted print! Elwynne Hi Elwynne- Thank you for the kind offer, but I won't be able to. Last Northern Lights Master Henry Mc Queen issued a "Trailblazers Challenge" which I entered. It was basically- do something that no one has done yet. So I wrote a paper on Dotted Prints. This year at Northern Lights I have to show up with a dotted print. So far I have been unsuccessful in my attempts at making one. (But I have at least a month... EEEK!) Hopefully every spare second I have will be devoted to that! Hope to see you at Northern Lights. Worm -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... How about changing our dates to the April Corination each year. We can do one presentation with two "baskets' one for the outgoing king/queen and one for the incoming king/queen. If we do this every year we will hit all the royals and not skip over reigns by just presenting at 12th night or birka. Plus we know both sets of royals will be there. >Smiles, >Heather Rose MacGordon It's certainly worth talking about the dates. Currently it's been two presentations, one at EK 12th Night and one at Spring Coronation. This way the royalty had a chance to either keep some of the gifts or, as I suspect was more usual, give them as gifts to other folks. Some may even have made it to other kingdoms, although I wouldn't know -- that's just the nature of giving gifts. We could also consider giving at each of the coronations, which would put the presentations further apart and give more breathing space for making things. As hard as we tried to make a go of it, we made the decision tonight to not go to Birka, neither as merchants nor guests. Between the physical therapy and general recovery from shoulder surgery last November, judging Elwynne's current energy level and how well she did after Kingdom 12th Night (completely worn out), it was becoming clear to us that she is not ready for participating at Birka. Combined with the fact that none of us really have much ready by way of gifts in the name of the Company, it looks like we will have to postpone any presentation to the Royalty after all. Heather Rose MacGordon suggested Spring Coronation. That is sounding like a most excellent plan. ;-) Truthfully, considering how everyone's energies have been focused this season, it was sounding like an excellent plan for this year anyway. So, let's plan on doing our next presentation at Coronation, with gifts for both sets of Royalty, appropriate to whether they are stepping down or stepping up. Regards, M. I'm sorry to hear it! I hope Elwynne is feeling better soon. I'm also sorry to say that the only project I've really been able to work on over the last couple of months is baby Mina, so I'm no help in the gifts department either. I've been busy on a few things. Mostly, I've secured an excellent full time that is letting me go to Estrella! Yeah I've been working with them for five months and I'm getting a week off to go before they "hire" me direct! Huzzah! It will be my first Estrella War. My armour is already on the way to Birka to get there via a land route. I've done, in 2007, about 8 scrolls for the Signet. Most of which I did the just the calligraphy, some of which I did both. This month I did two scrolls. One calligraphy for a Birka SC and one calligraphy for a Ruantallan Order of the Iceberg. I've done about three scrolls in non-English text - Russian, Norse Runes and Greek to date. My armour and my calligraphy are at Birka, but not me! ; ) I've also recently taught myself how to make a soft coptic book. I found instructions by someone (by Googling). I've done three of these books now. I gifted on to our Coronet, one to a student/gaming buddy of mine. These two had soft leather covers. I also did a book like this with a cloth cover as another friend is a vegan and preferred not to have leather. Lord Donal in our area has been steadily teaching *many* other people these skills he learned (and has improved upon) when Master Lyle last taught a class up here. He has shown a lot of people stitching techniques and sits and putters at events making books and adding to atmosphere. We are attracting more scribes, illuminators, and people interested in stationary arts. I let people know about the guild when I talk about stationary arts. My 15 year old archery student is now becoming the 15-year old A&S student. He did his first illumination in November and after seeing the works at 12th night, he said he really wants to commit to learning more about illumination. In the future, I plan on holding a class/workshop on working with period pigments. Likely in March as I will be beatin' in heads, er, visiting another kingdom, in February. My trip to Estrella will be via Ealdormere. While I cannot get to the events there, I plan on searching for cheap art supplies such as the bookbinding linen - which we get for about $1.30 per yard here. That's me! Have a grand time everyone! Wish I were there! Elise ferch Morgan ap Owen . . . who will be getting back on the road for events now that I have a flexible job. -- "The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence.
