Greetings Cousins, and Lovely Ja'Mala,

When in doubt dry clean. If you have a little leeway as to yardage, I would do the scrap thing. Personally, I cut a 6 by 6 inch square. I then zigzag the edges to assist in fraying during washing. I pin it to some other items of similar color and wash as regular (making sure that whatever you wash it with is safe for full cycle, i.e. no delicates). Then, once washed and dried, you take the scrap and measure the finished results. If the pattern is greatly diminished then that would suggest that subsequent washings might further remove it. If the fabric has shrunk, you will know that you MUST prewash it all PRIOR to constructions. There will almost always be a diminishment to sheen, less so with synthetics, but still a little. Once prewashed in hot or warm water and dried in a regular dryer setting, always then use cold water and hang dry. That is my method. If your finished piece will be court garb, there is no need to wash it as often as field garb and thus sometimes a
gentle hand washing will assist in prolonging the life of your garment. (after construction but still with prewashing of fabric, if your test piece comes through alright that is). Hope that helps.

Why, Mistress - I would never call you a smart at ss.

Ok, here's the deal. Etienne came home from Pennsic a couple of years ago with some GORGEOUS taffeta feeling reversable brocade, with fleurs all over. 3 different sets - black & silver, black & red, & black & blue. I would love to make a parti-colored cotehardie for him - but I would like to wash it first, if I can. Being the dear, sweet man that he is - he didn't get the pertinent information - what it is, how to care for it, etc.

Like I said, it feels like taffeta and/or polyester, but beyond that, I am not sure.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Ja'mala
