FAA regulations say knitting needles are ok, as are crochet hooks 
etc. I wouldn't risk metal ones, but plastic or wooden should be 
fine. Best option is to call the airline specifically and ask. 
However, even better is to get the current copy of allowed items from 
the FAA (can't find the web site but there is one) and point out that 
knitting needles are specifically allowed on all domestic flights.
