[Ek_fiber] Re: Ek_fiber Digest, Vol 1, Issue 7

At this point I am not for setting up a structure of seniority or officers. That kind of structure has driven me away from joining things in the past. I am of the opinion that we should start small, have some get together and talk fiber and what we are working on. I tend to want to lean more towards fiber education. Be it to each other or the public. Gifts to the crown are nice, but they get so much, it would be nice to give to them in service rather than stuff.

It would be nice to have a badge though. Maybe something incorporating a spindle, a sheep and knitting needles

As for scope. We talked about fiber prep, spinning, dying, weaving, knitting, nailbinding and everything else you do with handspun fiber that is period.

Is this list set up like a yahoo group, where we can add photos, files, and a history of posts?

I won't be able to go to the Northern Region War Camp. I propose that
anyone who can get together at any event probably should so that prospective
guild members can find us and get information. I'm thinking about this as
going under the same theory as "everyone is a chatelaine".

There's no class schedule posted for SRWC yet so I don't know when I'm
occupied.

Pax,
Sarah

I would love to get together at Southern Regional War Camp if that is the
same as the East Kingdom War Camp, but I have to teach a mundane knitting
class that Saturday and because it is right in the middle of the weekend, I
can’t go. I’m planning on going to Northern Regional War Camp the first
weekend in July. Can we get together then?

I stumbled across your list when looking for information on another EK
-List I am on. Fibre related activities are my main interest in both the
SCA and mundanely. Maybe I should introduce myself first. I am Branwen
filia Iohannis de Monmouth from the Barony of Ruantallan in the Northern
Shores District of the East Kingdom. Mundanely I am Lois Perry living in
Nova Scotia, Canada. I have been in the SCA for about 10 years now and
working with fibre of some kind for all my life. I am interested in
weaving, spinning, dyeing, sewing, narrow ware (lucet, tabletweave,
finger weave and braid) and am now learning knitting. None of these do I
do with any great expertise.

My thanks goes out to the people who took the initiative to start this
guild. The Kingdom is long overdue for a general fibre guild and I am
willing to help with anything I can do from a distance. Has any
discussion happened about the scope of the guild and just exactly how
much of the fibre arts we will cover.

Thank you Branwen

Welcome, Branwen :)

I'm so glad that you found us already. We're just in the process of
announcing the list's "birth" and our intention to form a fiber related
guild.

Also, hi AnneLiese (she joined this morning)!

Sarah

Hello!

I just joined this morning as well. Who else is here?

I'm very amused at the concept of being a fibernaut - to boldly go where
fiber has been before!!

For anyone who doesn't know me, I have a Laurel in Fiber. Some of my
specialties are spinning flax, an in-the-hand spindle spinning method
specific to Medieval and Renaissance Europe, netting for hairnets and
lacis, dyeing, and weaving. I'll post my Pennsic teaching schedule here
closer to Pennsic

I would also be interested in what has been discussed on the scope and
nature of this proto-guild. I assume there will be some natural
crossover with the Narrowworkers and possibly the Herbalists and
Apothecarys' guilds (for dyeing).

I haven't seen any mention of this list or of the formation of a fiber
guild on the EK_AnS list. It seems to me you might want to send an
announcement there of the list as well as the meetings planned.

Hello, Ladies,

I'm going to write an announcement either tonight or tomorrow morning. I
have some solstice related obligations tonight so I may not get to it till
tomorrow. If anyone else wants to take a stab at it, please, be my guest!

Do we need to achieve some sort of critical mass of people in order to
decide how to shape the guild? I'm thinking about things like rankings and
seniority. Do we need/want that kind of regimentation? What obligations
would we have to our members, to the crown? Do we want to lean more heavily
towards education or practical practices?

Nascently yours,
Sarah

This list is pretty new and became fully functional just before Landsknecht.
Announcements are in the works.

Yesterday, we began discussing how far and wide the announcement should be
made. I thought that the EK list, EK A&S, EK South, North, East, West, Up,
Down (whatever lists there are) should do it. And something to Shannon to
put in the Pikestaff. Other suggestions were to contact the Kingdom Web
Minister to see if we can broadcast to the various shire/barony/group lists.
I'll ask Robin Gallowglass if that's feasible. Does anyone else have an
opinion?

In my last post I asked some questions that are probably just the beginnings
of what we have to discuss. Eventually, there should be a lot of cross over
between guilds and that's going to be a fertile bed for lots of arts growth.

In answer to your question, AnneLiese, current members are AEllin, Sofia,
Elizabeth, Carowyn, Branwen, you and me. I just sent a note to Brid (when I
sent the note to you)

I have to go look like I'm working... :)
