Knitting Directions for reproducing the Hat from the Shipwreck of Gnalic

Based on information published in:
Flury-Lemberg, Mechthild. Textile Conservation and Research.
Abegg-Stiftung Bern, Switzerland: 1988.
As interpreted by Jennifer Munson (Mistress AnneLiese Wolkenhaar in the
SCA)

Finished gauge after fulling = 5 stitches/inch
(Since different yarns full differently, you need to knit your sample
AND full it before measuring! I am a handspinner therefore I have not
tested this with any commercially available yarns but I believe some
lopi-style yarns on needles around size 7-10 should suit the gauge.
Sample, sample, sample!)

IMPORTANT NOTES:

*****Do NOT use "yarn overs" for increases. "Inc1" should be interpreted
as the following sequence:

Inc1 = Knit the stitch below (from the previous row) and then knit the
current stitch

*****All unspecified rows are knitted around without increases or
decreases.

To make the doubled brim:

On double point or circular needles, cast on 96 stitches. Divide evenly
between 4 needles if using double point needles. Join and continue to
knit in the round as follows:

Rows 1-4 k around

Row 5 (k5, inc1) 16 times : 112 stitches

Row 10 (k6, inc1) 16 times : 128 stitches

Row 15 (k7, inc1) 16 times : 144 stitches

Row 20 (k7, k2tog) 16 times : 128 stitches

Row 25 (k6, k2tog) 16 times : 112 stitches

Row 30 (k5, k2tog) 16 times : 96 stitches

Rows 31-34 k around

Row 35 Fold flat and knit around the inside, knitting the
starting row together with row 34.

To make the crown:

Rows 1-4 k around

Row 5 (k5, inc1) 16 times : 112 stitches

Row 10 (k6, inc1) 16 times : 128 stitches

Row 15 (k7, inc1) 16 times : 144 stitches

Row 20 (k8, inc1) 16 times : 160 stitches

Row 25 (k9, inc1) 16 times : 176 stitches

Row 30 p around

Row 35 (k9, k2tog) 16 times : 160 stitches

Row 40 (k8, k2tog) 16 times : 144 stitches

Row 45 (k7, k2tog) 16 times : 128 stitches

Row 50 (k6, k2tog) 16 times : 112 stitches

Row 55 (k5, k2tog) 16 times : 96 stitches

Row 60 (k4, k2tog) 16 times : 80 stitches

Row 65 (k3, k2tog) 16 times : 64 stitches

Row 70 (k2, k2tog) 16 times : 48 stitches

Row 75 (k1, k2tog) 16 times : 32 stitches

Row 80 (k2tog) 16 times : 16 stitches

Row 85 (k2tog) 8 times : 8 stitches

Circle the yarn through the 8 remaining stitches and tie off on the
inside of the hat.

Enjoy!
