Anna--

It depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a cross-section of programs and events from every type of library, about 2000 different venders representing all facets of the library industry, and a good over view of how the American Library Association works. This is you event.

If you are looking for something focused more narrowly on public library, you would probably be more interested in PLA bi-ennial meeting or spring symposiums. These have smaller exhibit areas and a lower number of programs, but they are all focused on public libraries.

If you are looking for book shows, then I would try for BookExpo America (BEA) for English, Festival Internacional de Libros (FIL) commonly called the Guadalajara Book Fair for Spanish (ALA had a program with them, if you get into it, it only costs part of your airfare and meals), or the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Hope this helps.

PS Is anyone else looking at coming to ALA Annual? Do we want to try to get together in Chicago?

Omar
