[Artemisia] crosses in heraldry

One of the most prominent usage of a cross in SCA heraldry is the Kingdom of Calontir. Its arms....a purple field with a gold Cross of Calantrava encircled by gold laurel leaves....The cross is on most Calontir awards and the Grant level award for service is know as the Order of the Cross of Calontir..... I do find it quite interesting that we as a re-enactment group fear or choose to ignore something that was a basic part of everyday life for quite a large number of people.....I guess in these modern middle ages one can never be quite pc enough not to ruffle those all to delicate feathers. I don't know why really open minded people always seem to be the people whom get offended first and the most.....Isn't life wonderful....?

Personally, I don't like it. I do not like seeing *any* well known religious symbol used as either an award or a token. (no matter what the historic usage was) On the other hand, I don't recall seeing the award token for the Key Cross. What does it look like?
(By the way, I have *no* problem with any period religious symbols being used in personal heraldry. After all, that is meant to represent *you*, and you are not expecting anyone else to *wear* it.)

I am not sure if I have an opinion about the "cross as site token" thing.
As for the cross in heraldry... I believe it is a way for people to flesh out their personas. After all, many people have Christian personas. I think to say "you can't use a cross" is foolish, as long as you are talking about individuals. Groups are another story.
Which brings me to an interesting question.
How do you all feel about the fact that the Kingdom Grant Level Arts award is called the Order of the Key Cross (since the original Sable Keys in Cross was unregisterable)? The key cross is one heraldic representation of the cross.
Opinions? Not that it will change things, but I am curious. Feel free to respond privately if you would rather.

hmm,

Then is a cross appropriate for display in heraldry?
The cross is inherently period for Europeans. If someone finds offense
because of any period religious symbol then they are to uptight.
Displaying said sysmbols may or may not be a statement of faith. What do I
care what they believe or don't. Displaying is not preaching.
As long as they are not preaching who cares what the symbol is if it adds to
the flavor and realism.
