(Forgive the bottom posting)
After reading all of these postings about memorials/Vigil chapel you have
all reaffirmed why I joined and continue to be a part of the SCA. You may
disagree and raise much discourse amounst yourselves but when it comes down
to it, you show the greatest compassion and caring for each other that in
this day in age is rarely seen even in our own families.
You all have made great points.
The idea of a place to honor those who have left us and inspired us is a
truly noble effort. I believe with good planning this could be achieved
w/ease.
You all have rightly also brought up the point of the Society's stand on
religious expression during SCA events which can be a very difficult issue
to deal with even if we are all tolerant of each other's beliefs. So
leaving religious symbols absent and leave it just a place for
contemplation, and reflection would be the most satisfying for all.
I do however love the idea of having a lasting celebration of the lives of
those we've lost. Mst. Liam and I discussed this very idea when we lost two
of our own household in rapid succession. We've contemplated hosting a
tourney to honor those we've lost. It could be made a permanent tourney
at Uprising or some other major event in the kingdom. I am definitely not
one to set up the details but keeping it as a tribute to the virtues, ideals
and lessons that those friends displayed/imparted while they were with us
would be a good place to start.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
