I don't know if you've been following some of our neighbor's response to
their situation, but I find it rather inspirational, so I thought I'd share
this. Seemed rather apropos after the long discussion of survival skills.

Hi folks,

I hope you will forgive this off-topic post.

I know some people have been asking if they can help any regarding
the earthquake that devastated the city of Christchurch New Zealand
(part of the Barony of Southron Gaard of the Kingdom of Lochac, late
of Caid).

Know that SCAdians have been answering the call. People across our
Kingdom have been donating to Red Cross as well as sending funds to
us personally. Local SCAdians have been using those direct funds to
buy and deliver urgent supplies in areas where they've heard little
from welfare/civil defense (the scale of the emergency has largely
over-whelmed our official response capabilities).

We've had people startled to find a medieval group is bringing them
food, water and other necessities. We've seen our people be
magnificent in the most trying of conditions. We may expect nothing
less, but nonetheless it has been wonderful to be a small part of
that.

If you want to see the sort of thing that has been going on, check
this out:

Those unsung heroes and reports are coming largely from our people,
coordinated by my lord Bartholomew Baskin (who's probably finding it
easier than being Kingdom Seneschal!).

I'm not telling you this for some ego-boosting, but because people
have been asking how we're doing -- and I figure maybe spreading this
information might give you an idea of how you could manage under
similar circumstances.

Our social networks are strong and valuable in ways far more
important than the latest local fighter practice or potluck event.
And I, for one, am proud of that.

Sincerely,
katherine kerr
of the shaken but strong Barony of Southron Gaard

P.S. Yes, you can pass this missive on.

P.P.S. If you want to see a secondary effort I'm running:
