[Artemisia] Kingdom Calendar Change proposal

Valid points have been brought up throughout this conversation. I wonder how many people attend family campouts during Labor Day weekend since typically that's what people have planned. Labor Day and Memorial weekends are hard to plan other activities because of that. I remember one year Stan Wrym planned something and we canceled because of Labor Day and folks going to their family reunions, campouts being held before school starts, what have you. I remember the data, Braden, you had included on your original post about changing the calendar. For Montana it included Bozeman but not the rest of Montana. The weather man stated last week that April has more snow than March in these parts. East of the mountains we have winds that hit 60-70 mph because of chinooks and that's pretty miserable.
The calendar change would interfere with our signature event, Dragons Tear. That is the main reason I don't want the calendar change. Has anyone asked the groups that hold events on the 3rd weekend of the month how it would impact their group if they had to change their date? or compete with a Kingdom event? Speaking for my local group, we would loose Dragons Tear. That would be pretty sad since it is one of two of Artemisia's oldest events. We have already nixed one event and that would leave us one one day event. Perhaps asking for a impact statement from groups needs to be taken into consideration before the calendar change is official. And we invite all that has never attended Dragons Tear to attend this year and see why we don't want to loose this site. It is the best site in all of Artemisia. It has cabins, hot and cold running water, bathrooms, showers, lodge and state of the art kitchen, room for pavilions, woods, open area's, large
pavilion, room for archery, a creek.. and this we would loose.

Since I was in charge of championing the idea for the Kingdom Seneschal,
(it's not all me! This time it's not actually all my fault) let me state a
few reasoning points and clarifications:
First, the idea was not to stick with a specific weekend of the month for
Kingdom events. MLK is 3rd weekend of January, Kingdom Day is the 2nd
Saturday in July. Labor Day is obviously the 1st weekend in September.
Could be confusing, but hopefully won't be.
MLK weekend Coronation - with so many gov't/teacher/post office employees in
our ranks, this essentially becomes a long weekend. Long weekends are nice
for Kingdom events with a lot going on... like a Coronation! Speaking from
experience, you have 12 hours worth of SCA stuff to do. Be nice to spread
it over 2 days. You can do a Saturday night bardic for the Bard of
Artemisia.
April Crown - 1st weekend. Yup, it may snow. It has before. April *IS*
less snowy than March. In fact, the snowiest part of the entire year for
significant snowstorms across Artemisia is early March. I actually pulled
the NWS snow data for several years and can show you the proof. (never
argue with a data analyst!)
May Collegium - Balances the event count between the reigns, and it's
equi-distant between Crown and Uprising.
July Coronation - back to the Kingdom Day weekend. It's still in Kingdom
Law. It gives the Kingdom a chance to have a lucrative camping weekend.
It's also a couple weeks before Pennsic and a month after Uprising. Again,
a Saturday night campfire for a Kingdom Bard competition? A no brainer.
Also....
In 2017 will be Artemisia XX. Wouldn't it be fun to have a week-long event
with tournaments melees, and culminate with a Coronation?
Labor Day weekend Champions event - Gives 2 full days to have the year-term
champions events: Youth Combat, archery, equestrian (both skills and
jousting), Arts & Sciences, and thrown weapons. The Bard of Artemisia
should be decided by each reign (my personal opinion) but somehow we should
come up with a way to have an awesome Kingdom bardic around the campfire at
this event.
October Crown - generally the nicest part of the whole year across
Artemisia.
It is true that we would have to pre-bid Coronations... just like every
other Kingdom in the Society. I was extraordinarily lucky to have a site
for this last Coronation so convenient and so quick. Ask any of the
previous few Event Stewards for Coronations, that's the exception and not
the rule. In this day and age, if you aren't booking a year+ in advance,
good luck. Morgan & Kelwin are right: if you don’t like where Coronation
will be, then don't fight in the tournament. You are in service to
Artemisia as the King and Queen. The Kingdom doesn't technically owe you
anything, you have to earn it.
This year we are trying the Champions weekend... in late July. I see it as
a laid back version of Uprising. Shorter, smaller, and a less frantic
schedule. I encourage everyone to come see this and have a nice weekend
with friends, watching several championships. It's like going to the
Olympics, but cheaper tickets, and better dressed fans.
