Hmm -- it looks like the book _Textiles and Clothing, c.1150-c.1450_, by Elisabeth Crowfoot, Frances Pritchard, Kay Staniland cited something by Grace Crowfoot as it had been cited by someone else.  The 1954 Antiquaries Journal article listed below is actually not by Grace Crowfoot, but by RC Musson.  I think that the bibliography from the Musson article needs to be examined closely to determine what's going on.BTW, I do not have access to the Antiquaries Journal or the full version Textiles and Clothing book -- I'm extrapolating from what I found online.  I do, however, have access to NYPL, which has both -- if I have the time, I'll try to figure out what's going on with this citation before the end of the week.-- Galefridus----- Original Message -----From: Amanda Hise Date: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 12:45 pmSubject: Re: [Sca-librarians] reference helpTo: galefridus at optimum.net> > 52. ‘A thirteenth-century bronze buckle with attached braid from > Bramble Bottom, near> Eastbourne’ Antiquaries Journal, XXXIV (1954) 234-235.> could this have been the reference?> http://www.brown.edu/Research/Breaking_Ground/bios/Crowfoot_Grace.pdf> > --- On Tue, 8/25/09, galefridus at optimum.net > wrote:> > > From: galefridus at optimum.net > Subject: Re: [Sca-librarians] reference help> To: SNSpies at aol.com> Cc: sca-librarians at lists.gallowglass.org> Date: Tuesday, August 25, 2009, 11:07 AM> > > There's an interesting problem here -- I just checked the online > TOC of the Antiquaries Journal and found that Grace Crowfoot > published exactly two articles in that journal, neither of which > is the one you're looking for.  Moreover, none of the more > reliable bibliographies of Crowfoot's work that I have located > list the article in question.  For example, the biographical > essay written by her daughter > (http://www.brown.edu/Research/Breaking_Ground/bios/Crowfoot_Grace.pdf) includes a comprehensive bibliography, and this article is not among those listed.  It looks like we have a phantom citation.> > It seems to me that one of a couple things might have happened, > probably in combination:> > 1.  An article with the given title exists somewhere, but was > written by someone else, possibly one of her daughters who were > also involved in this area of scholarship, or> > 2.  An article was written by Grace Crowfoot on the subject > described by the title, but it had a different title and was > published in a different journal.> > 3.  Someone who was compiling a bibliography did not properly > document his or her sources, resulting in the creation of the > phantom citation.> > 4.  Others saw the phantom citation and included it in their > bibliographies without verification.> > This is not an uncommon occurrence -- I have even read scholarly > articles discussing the perpetuation of the phantom citation.> > ----- Original Message -----> From: SNSpies at aol.com> Date: Monday, August 24, 2009 11:56 pm> Subject: Re: [Sca-librarians] reference help> To: galefridus at optimum.net> > > Actually, that is a different (but wonderful!) article.
